Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), born in Delft, Netherlands, is revered as one of the most significant painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
His body of work, though relatively modest in size (comprising about 36 known works), exemplifies exquisite mastery of light and colour, which distinguishes his pieces from those of his contemporaries.
Vermeer’s renowned works, such as 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' and 'The Milkmaid', illustrate intimate domestic scenes filled with atmospheric depth.
Vermeer often employed a unique technique known as 'camera obscura', which allowed him to create a sense of realism that was ahead of his time. This method enabled him to capture the play of light on surfaces and the intricate details of everyday life, transforming mundane moments into extraordinary visual narratives.
His compositions are characterised by their meticulous arrangement of elements, and the use of rich, luminous colours derived from costly pigments, which were indicative of his dedication to craft.
Despite his technical prowess, Vermeer did not achieve widespread fame during his lifetime; much of his recognition came posthumously. His works fell into relative obscurity until the 19th century, when they were rediscovered and celebrated for their innovative approach and beauty.
Today, Vermeer’s paintings are cherished worldwide and continue to inspire artists and art lovers alike. His ability to convey emotion through serene, contemplative scenes serves as a testament to his genius and enduring legacy in the art world.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
