Emily Overnell
Emily A. Overnell (1870-1915) was born Emily Annabella Attwell in 1870 to Augustus, a butcher, and Emily Ann. Her younger sister was illustrator Mabel Lucie Attwell who was 10 years her junior. It was probably Emily's artistic flair that gave rise to Mabel's interest in illustration.
Emily regularly contributed to magazines and periodicals as well as some book illustration work, notably for Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' amongst others.
She married art editor Thomas Overnell in 1897 and had three children, Ethel (b.1899), Rosalind (b.1903) and Leonard (b.1906).
Emily died of pneumonia following a short illness in 1915 at the age of 45.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
