Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) was a French painter, printmaker and illustrator whose distinctive style and keen observations of nightlife have left an indelible mark on the art world.

Despite his short stature, due to a medical condition, Toulouse-Lautrec's larger-than-life spirit and passion for art prevailed.

Best known for his vivid depictions of the bustling cabarets and brothels of late 19th-century Paris, his works encapsulate the vibrant energy and complexities of modern life.

His iconic posters, particularly those advertising the Moulin Rouge, effectively captured the essence of the Parisian spirit, blending a sense of immediacy with a flair for visual storytelling. The use of bold colours and innovative compositions set him apart from his contemporaries, embracing a style that melded impressionism with graphic design.

Toulouse-Lautrec had a unique ability to portray the lives of his subjects with both empathy and a critical eye. Whether it was a dancer mid-performance or a simple bar-room scene, his work reflected both the glamour and the grit of urban life.

Despite his struggles with alcoholism and health issues, Toulouse-Lautrec's legacy flourished, influencing generations of artists.

His ability to immortalise the ephemeral nature of entertainment and human experience renders him a pivotal figure in the transition from traditional to modern art. He passed away in 1901, but his contributions continue to resonate in the realms of art and pop culture.
