Salomé is a one-act tragedy by Oscar Wilde. The original version of the play was first published in French in 1893; an English translation was published a year later. Beardsley was commissioned to illustrate the play at the age of just 21 after a picture that appeared in Studio magazine, showing Salomé revelling in the severed head of John the Baptist, came to Wilde's attention.
