Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a prolific Flemish Baroque painter, renowned for his exuberant and dynamic compositions that often celebrated themes of mythology, history and religious subjects.

Born in Siegen, Germany, Rubens spent much of his formative years in Antwerp, where he became a master in the guild of Saint Luke. His deep understanding of classical art, coupled with the influence of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the works of Titian and Caravaggio, shaped his distinctive style.

Rubens was not just a painter but also a diplomat and a scholar, which allowed him to engage with the cultural exchanges of his time.

His art is characterised by vigorous movement, rich colour palettes and an extraordinary ability to depict the human form with sensuality and realism.

One of his most celebrated works, 'The Descent from the Cross', exemplifies his dramatic flair and emotional depth, capturing the viewer's attention through its composition and use of chiaroscuro.

Additionally, Rubens was a skilled portraitist, capturing the personalities and status of his subjects while integrating a sense of grandeur.

His influence extended beyond his lifetime, shaping generations of artists, including his pupils and followers.
