This Public Domain Image Library DVD features more than 650 beautiful illustrations in jpeg format by Australian artist and friend of James McNeil Whister, Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938).

The illustrations are out of copyright and free to use in whatever way you’d like, even COMMERCIAL USE is fine! 

Menpes set off on a sketching tour of Brittany in 1880, during which he met James McNeill Whistler. He became Whistler’s pupil, and at one stage shared a flat with him in Cheyne Walk in London. 

In 1900, after the outbreak of the Boer War, Menpes was sent to South Africa as a war artist for the weekly illustrated magazine Black & White. After the end of the war in 1902 he travelled widely, visiting Burma, Egypt, France, India, Italy, Japan, Kashmir, Mexico, Morocco, and Spain. Many of his illustrations were published in travel books by A & C Black.

Mortimer Menpes was an Australian artist and former pupil of Whistler, who was mainly a travel artist.

Menpes set off on a sketching tour of Brittany in 1880, during which he met James McNeill Whistler. He became Whistler’s pupil, and at one stage shared a flat with him in Cheyne Walk in London.

All pictures are named in the following format, eg. Menpes, Mortimer (1855-1938) – Japan 1901 – Street scene, ie. Artist name/dates – Publication from which its taken & date – Name of picture/description. 

All of the images were scanned at 300 dpi and mostly range from 1012 pixels wide/tall – 2815px wide/tall with only 7 pictures being just a little smaller than this.
