He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later joined the influential Blaue Reiter group, which focused on the emotional resonance of colours and shapes.

Klee's work is characterised by his innovative use of colour and form, often inspired by his dreams, the natural world and children's art. He once famously stated that ‘drawing is taking a line for a walk’, reflecting his playful approach to creating art. His style evolved over the years, integrating elements of expressionism, cubism, and surrealism, leading to a distinct visual language marked by whimsical motifs and vibrant hues.

Throughout his career, Klee produced over 9,000 works, including paintings, drawings, and prints. Some of his most renowned pieces include ‘Senecio’, with its bold colours and stylized features, and ‘Twittering Machine’, which exemplifies his fascination with the relationship between nature and the playful aspects of human creativity. Klee's time teaching at the Bauhaus, a revolutionary school of art and design, further solidified his impact on modern art, allowing him to experiment and share his philosophies with a new generation of artists.

The Klee family emigrated to Switzerland in late 1933. In that year, Klee began experiencing the symptoms of what was diagnosed as scleroderma after his death. The progression of this fatal disease, which made swallowing very difficult, can be followed through the art he created in his last years. His output in 1936 was only 25 pictures. In the later 1930s, his health recovered somewhat, and he was encouraged by a visit from Kandinsky and Picasso.

Klee's simpler and larger designs enabled him to keep up his output in his final years, and in 1939 he created over 1,200 works, a career high for one year. He used heavier lines and mainly geometric forms with fewer but larger blocks of colour. His varied colour palettes, some with bright colours and others sombre, perhaps reflected his alternating moods of optimism and pessimism. Back in Germany in 1937, seventeen of Klee's pictures were included in an exhibition of ‘Degenerate Art’ (a term adopted in the 1920s by the Nazi Party in Germany to describe modern art) and 102 of his works in public collections were seized by the Nazis.

Klee’s legacy endures in the art world, with his works influencing numerous movements and artists. He also produced religious art, satire, and Reformation propaganda, and he made a significant contribution to the history of book design. He is called "the Younger" to distinguish him from his father Hans Holbein the Elder, an accomplished painter of the Late Gothic school.

Holbein was born in Augsburg but worked mainly in Basel as a young artist. At first, he painted murals and religious works, and designed stained glass windows and illustrations for books from the printer Johann Froben. He also painted an occasional portrait, making his international mark with portraits of humanist Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. When the Reformation reached Basel, Holbein worked for reformist clients while continuing to serve traditional religious patrons. His Late Gothic style was enriched by artistic trends in Italy, France, and the Netherlands, as well as by Renaissance humanism. The result was a combined aesthetic uniquely his own.

Holbein travelled to England in 1526 in search of work with a recommendation from Erasmus. He was welcomed into the humanist circle of Thomas More, where he quickly built a high reputation. He returned to Basel for four years, then resumed his career in England in 1532 under the patronage of Anne Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell. By 1535, he was King's Painter to Henry VIII. In this role, he produced portraits and festive decorations, as well as designs for jewellery, plate, and other precious objects. His portraits of the royal family and nobles are a record of the court in the years when Henry was asserting his supremacy over the Church of England.

Holbein's art was prized from early in his career. French poet and reformer Nicholas Bourbon (the elder) dubbed him "the Apelles of our time", a typical accolade at the time. Holbein has also been described as a great "one-off" in art history since he founded no school. Some of his work was lost after his death, but much was collected and he was recognised among the great portrait masters by the 19th century. Recent exhibitions have also highlighted his versatility. He created designs ranging from intricate jewellery to monumental frescoes.

Holbein's art has sometimes been called realist, since he drew and painted with a rare precision. His portraits were renowned in their time for their likeness, and it is through his eyes that many famous figures of his day are pictured today, such as Erasmus and More. He was never content with outward appearance, however; he embedded layers of symbolism, allusion, and paradox in his art, to the lasting fascination of scholars. In the view of art historian Ellis Waterhouse, his portraiture "remains unsurpassed for sureness and economy of statement, penetration into character, and a combined richness and purity of style."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Hans_Holbein_the_Younger_50_High_Resolution_Images.jpg?v=1748501123
theophile-steinlen-34-high-resolution-images
Théophile Steinlen 34 High Resolution Images

Théophile Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker whose famous works include his poster for Le Chat Noir.

This download features 34 hi-res images, in jpeg format, by the artist Théophile Steinlen.

The images are all 300dpi or 600dpi and range in size from 1315 pixels wide/tall to 10778 pixels wide/tall.

The pictures are out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use them in whatever way you’d like, including commercial use.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923), was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Born in Chur, Switzerland, to an artist father, Johann Joseph Kauffman, Angelica’s early exposure to art and culture set the stage for her extraordinary career. Her upbringing was peripatetic, moving through Austria, Italy, and eventually England, absorbing diverse artistic influences along the way.

Kauffman’s prodigious abilities were apparent from a young age. Fluent in several languages and musically gifted, she was a true Enlightenment polymath. Yet it was painting that became her principal vocation. Trained by her father and other masters, she mastered portraiture and historical painting, genres which, at the time, were largely dominated by men. Her reputation grew quickly, especially after a period spent in Italy, where she was influenced by the works of Raphael and the classical traditions of the Renaissance.

In 1766, Kauffman moved to London, which proved a decisive step in her career. The British capital was a burgeoning centre of art and culture, offering new opportunities for ambitious artists. Here, Kauffman befriended Sir Joshua Reynolds and became a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768, one of only two women to achieve this distinction at the time. Her presence in the Academy was significant, both as a symbol of women’s potential in the arts and as an active contributor to its early development. Her self-portraits and allegorical works often reflect this consciousness, presenting herself as an intellectual equal to her male peers.

Kauffman’s oeuvre is characterised by its elegant composition, refined colour palette, and the subtle emotional resonance of her subjects. She excelled in portraiture, capturing not only the likeness but also the character of her sitters, who included British aristocrats, intellectuals, and fellow artists. However, it was her history paintings, then considered the highest genre, that cemented her reputation. Works such as “Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi” and “Ariadne Abandoned by Theseus” exemplify her mastery of classical themes and her ability to infuse them with a sense of contemporary relevance and psychological depth.

Despite her professional success, Kauffman’s life was not without personal challenges. She endured a disastrous early marriage to an impostor and, later, the death of her beloved second husband, the Venetian artist Antonio Zucchi. Nonetheless, she maintained her artistic output and influence, spending her final years in Rome, where she continued to paint and participate in the city’s vibrant artistic circles.

Upon her death in 1807, Kauffman was honoured with a grand funeral in Rome, attended by leading artists and dignitaries, a testament to her enduring impact. Her legacy endures not only through her impressive body of work but also through her pioneering example as a woman who navigated, and triumphed in, the male-dominated world of eighteenth-century European art. Today, Angelica Kauffman is rightly celebrated as a trailblazer whose artistry and intellect helped shape the course of Western art history.

Digital Download -
