Phillips, Ammi

Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) was a prominent American folk artist renowned for his distinctive portrait paintings. Born in Colebrook, Connecticut, Phillips spent much of his life working throughout the rural regions of New England and New York. His career spanned over fifty years, during which he produced an estimated one thousand portraits, though only a fraction are positively attributed to him today.

Phillips was largely self-taught and operated as an itinerant painter, travelling from town to town in search of commissions. His clientele were predominantly members of the burgeoning American middle class, such as farmers, merchants, and their families, who sought affordable yet dignified representations of themselves. Unlike academically trained artists, Phillips developed a style rooted in the traditions of American folk art, characterised by bold colours, simplified forms, and a keen sense of pattern and design.

His early works, produced in the 1810s and 1820s, often display restrained palettes and relatively flat compositions, with sitters presented against plain backgrounds. Over time, his technique evolved notably. By the 1830s and 1840s, Phillips’ portraits became more sophisticated, featuring rich, dark backgrounds, dramatic lighting, and a subtle modelling of faces and hands. His mature style is instantly recognisable: subjects are typically depicted with almond-shaped eyes, rosy cheeks, and an understated, serene expression. He paid careful attention to costume and accessories, offering viewers a glimpse into the fashions and material culture of the period.

For many years, the identity of Ammi Phillips remained somewhat mysterious, as his works were often unsigned or simply marked “A. Phillips.” It was not until the twentieth century that art historians pieced together the evidence linking these portraits to a single hand, culminating in the attribution of the so-called “Border Limner” paintings to Phillips.

Today, Ammi Phillips is celebrated as one of the most important American folk artists. His portraits are held in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Folk Art Museum. His work offers valuable insight into nineteenth-century American society and continues to be admired for its charm, technical skill, and historical significance.

Portrait by American Folk artist Ammi Phillips featuring a girl with a dog.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 4310 pixels wide by 5100 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about Ammi Phillips.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Phillips_Ammi_1788-1865_-GirlinaRedDress_main.jpg?v=1788194697
phillips-ammi-1788-1865-portrait-of-a-young-woman-poss-mrs-hardy-c-1812-19
Phillips, Ammi (1788-1865) - Portrait of a Young Woman, poss Mrs Hardy c.1812-19

Portrait by American Folk artist Ammi Phillips.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 4312 pixels wide by 5187 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about Ammi Phillips.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Phillips_Ammi_1788-1865_-PortraitofaYoungWoman_possMrsHardyc1812-19_main.jpg?v=1788195302
phillips-ammi-1788-1865-mother-and-child-in-grey-dresses-c-1825
Phillips, Ammi (1788-1865) - Mother and Child in Grey Dresses c.1825

Portrait attributed to American Folk artist Ammi Phillips.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 3520 pixels wide by 4264 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about Ammi Phillips.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Phillips_Ammi_1788-1865_attr._-MotherandChildinGreyDresses_main.jpg?v=1788195684
