Pasternak, Leonid

Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (1862-1945) was a distinguished Russian painter and graphic artist, best remembered today as the father of Boris Pasternak, the Nobel Prize-winning poet and novelist. Born in Odessa, then part of the Russian Empire, Pasternak’s early life was shaped by the rich cultural mix of the Black Sea port. His artistic inclinations emerged early, and, despite his parents’ hope that he would pursue a career in medicine, Leonid chose to follow his passion for art, enrolling in the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

Pasternak became associated with the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), a group of realist artists who sought to break away from academic restrictions and bring art to the people. His style, however, was more lyrical and impressionistic than many of his contemporaries. He was particularly adept at capturing the subtleties of light and atmosphere, a trait evident in his many portraits and domestic scenes.

Throughout his career, Pasternak painted a number of prominent figures in Russian culture, including Leo Tolstoy, whose friendship and trust he valued greatly. Pasternak was invited to Yasnaya Polyana, Tolstoy’s estate, where he produced sketches and paintings of the writer at work. These images have become iconic, offering a vivid glimpse into Tolstoy’s later years. Pasternak’s ability to render psychological depth and intimacy in his portraits earned him widespread recognition.

In addition to painting, Pasternak was also a skilled illustrator, contributing to several important literary works, including Tolstoy’s “Resurrection.” His illustrations, sensitive and expressive, complemented the texts and were highly regarded by both authors and readers.

Following the upheavals of the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet regime, Pasternak, who was of Jewish heritage, began to feel increasingly isolated. In 1921, he and his family left Russia for Germany, settling in Berlin. There, he continued to paint, exhibit, and teach, becoming a respected member of the émigré artistic community. As the political climate in Germany deteriorated with the growing threat of Nazism, Pasternak relocated once again, this time to London in 1938.

Leonid Pasternak spent his final years in Britain, where he remained active as an artist and teacher until his death in 1945. His legacy endures through his evocative paintings and drawings, as well as through the literary accomplishments of his son, Boris.

Picture by Russian artist Leonid Pasternak.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 3381 pixels wide by 4543 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about Leonid Pasternak.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Pasternak_Leonid_1862-1945_-Josephine_herMotherHullingBerries1913_main.jpg?v=1771629489
pasternak-leonid-1862-1945-the-wounded-soldier-1914
Pasternak, Leonid (1862-1945) - The Wounded Soldier 1914

Picture by Russian artist Leonid Pasternak.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 4545 pixels wide by 6201 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about Leonid Pasternak.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Pasternak_Leonid_1862-1945_-TheWoundedSoldier1914_main.jpg?v=1771629489
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/collections/Pasternak_Leonid_1862-1945-1524468.jpg?v=1771629392
