He was a member of the Sergei Diaghilev circle and the Ballets Russes, for which he designed exotic, richly coloured sets and costumes. He designed the décor for such productions as Carnaval (1910), Spectre de la rose (1911), Daphnis and Chloe (1912), The Sleeping Princess (1921) and others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLeyb-Khaim Izrailevich (later Samoylovich) Rosenberg was born in Grodno, Grodno Governorate of the Russian Empire (now Belarus) into a middle-class Jewish family. As his grandfather was an exceptional tailor, the Tsar gave him a very good position, and he had a huge and wonderful house in Saint Petersburg. Later, when Leyb's parents moved to the capital, the boy Leyb would visit his grandfather's house every Saturday. He said that he had been very impressed as a youth by that house, always returning with pleasure. At the young age of twelve, Lejb won a drawing contest and decided to become a painter. However, the parents disapproved of it and even threw away his paints.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter several years, the parents divorced and started new families and it became impossible to live with a step-mother, so the four siblings separated and rented their own place. As the eldest, Lejb was in charge of two sisters and brother, he 'took all kinds of painting work'. After graduating from gymnasium, he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts as a non-credit student, because he had failed the entry. He also worked part-time as a book illustrator, gaining admission into the Imperial Academy in 1883.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the time of his first exhibition (1889) he took the surname of Bakst, though the origin of the pseudonym is still unclear. There are at least three versions, according to the main one, his mother's grandmother had the maiden name Bakster. Alexander Benois, a life-long friend of Leon, recalled that 'Leo gave a prolonged and confusing explanation that the surname was taken from some distant relatives'.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the beginning of the 1890s, Bakst exhibited his works with the Society of Watercolourists. From 1893 to 1897 he lived in Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian. He still often visited Saint Petersburg. After the mid-1890s, Bakst became a member of the circle of writers and artists formed by Sergei Diaghilev and Benois, who in 1899 founded the influential periodical Mir iskusstva, meaning \"World of Art\". His graphics for this publication brought him fame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1898, he showed his works in the Diaghilev-organized First Exhibition of Russian and Finnish Artists; in World of Art exhibitions, as well as the Munich Secession, exhibitions of the Union of Russian Artists, etc. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeginning in 1909, Bakst worked mostly as a stage-designer, designing sets for Greek tragedies. In 1908, he gained attention as a scene-painter for Diaghilev with the Ballets Russes. He produced scenery for Cléopâtre (1909), Scheherazade (1910), Carnaval (1910), Narcisse (1911), Le Spectre de la Rose (1911), L'après-midi d'un faune (1912) and Daphnis et Chloé (1912). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBakst died on 27 December 1924, in a clinic in Rueil Malmaison, near Paris, from lung problems (oedema). His Poems from the Trenches are recognised as some of the most outstanding poetry written during the First World War.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRosenberg was born in Bristol on 25 November 1890. He was the second of six children and the eldest son (his twin brother died at birth) of his parents, Barnett (formerly Dovber) and Hacha Rosenberg, who were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants to Britain from Dvinsk (now in Latvia). In 1897, the family moved to Stepney, a poor district of the East End of London, and one with a large Jewish community. Isaac Rosenberg attended St. Paul's Primary School and later, the Baker Street Board School in Stepney, which had a strong Jewish presence. In 1902, he received a good conduct award and was allowed to take classes at the Arts and Crafts School in Stepney Green. In December 1904, he left the Baker Street School, and in January 1905, he started an apprenticeship with Carl Hentschel, an engraver from Fleet Street.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe became interested in both poetry and visual art and attended evening classes at Birkbeck College. He withdrew from his apprenticeship in January 1911. After a chance meeting in March 1911 with Lily Delissa Joseph at the National Gallery, she, her sister Henrietta Löwy and Mrs Herbert Cohen sponsored his application in October 1911 to attend the Slade School of Fine Art at University College, London (UCL). During his time at Slade School, Rosenberg notably studied alongside David Bomberg, Mark Gertler, Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, Edward Wadsworth, Dora Carrington, William Roberts, and Christopher Nevinson. He was taken up by Laurence Binyon and Edward Marsh, and began to write poetry seriously, but he suffered from ill-health. He published a pamphlet of ten poems, Night and Day, in 1912. He also exhibited paintings at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1914.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfraid that his chronic bronchitis would worsen, Rosenberg hoped to cure himself by relocating in 1914 to the warmer climate of South Africa, where his sister Mina lived in Cape Town. The Jewish Educational Aid Society of London helped by paying the fare.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter arriving in Cape Town in the end of June 1914, he composed a poem \"On Receiving News of the War\". While many wrote about war as patriotic sacrifice, Rosenberg was critical of it from the outset. However, feeling better and hoping to find employment as an artist in Britain, Rosenberg returned home in March 1915. He published a second collection of poems, Youth, and then after being unable to find a permanent job enlisted in the British Army at the end of October 1915. He asked that half of his pay be sent to his mother.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a personal letter, Rosenberg described his attitude towards war, \"I never joined the army for patriotic reasons. Nothing can justify war. I suppose we must all fight to get the trouble over.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRosenberg was assigned to the 12th Bantam Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, a bantam being a designation for men under the usual minimum height of 5'3\". After apparently declining promotion to lance corporal, Rosenberg was transferred, first, to the South Lancashire Regiment, then to the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment (KORL). He was sent with his unit to serve on the Western Front in France, where he arrived on 3 June 1916. He continued to write poetry while serving in the trenches, including \"Break of Day in the Trenches\", \"Returning We Hear the Larks\", and \"Dead Man's Dump\". In December 1916, Poetry Magazine published two of his poems.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn January 1917, Rosenberg reported being sick and his family and friends asked his superiors to remove him from the front lines; he was transferred to the Fortieth Division Works Battalion and started to deliver barbed wire to the trenches. He wrote his poem Dead Man's Dump during this period. In June, he was temporarily assigned to the 229 Field Company, Royal Engineers. In September 1916, he spent ten days in London on leave. After returning to his old unit, he fell sick in October and spent two months in the 51st General Hospital. After release, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He applied for a transfer to an all-Jewish battalion, but historians have been unable to trace his application.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn 21 March 1918, the German Army started its Spring Offensive on the Western Front. A week later, Rosenberg sent his last letter with the poem \"Through These Pale Cold Days\" to England before going to the front lines with reinforcements. Having just finished a night patrol, he was killed on the night of 1 April 1918 with another ten KORL soldiers; there is a dispute as to whether his death occurred at the hands of a sniper or in close combat. In either case, he died in a town called Fampoux, northeast of Arras. He was first buried in a mass grave, but in 1926 the unidentified remains of the six KORL soldiers were individually re-interred at Bailleul Road East Cemetery, Plot V, Saint-Laurent-Blangy, Pas de Calais, France. It was the meeting place of writers, painters, sculptors, and actors, often struggling financially, who exchanged and created art and literature whilst sitting and chatting in cafes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was here that Soutine met Modigliani, who painted Soutine's portrait several times, most famously in 1917, on a door of an apartment belonging to Léopold Zborowski, who was their art dealer. Until he acquired his own studio, he slept and worked at various places, his poverty was such that he even slept in stairways and on benches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eZborowski supported Soutine through World War I, taking the struggling artist with him to Nice to escape the possible German invasion of Paris.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the war, Paul Guillaume, a highly influential art dealer, began to champion Soutine's work. In 1923, in a showing arranged by Guillaume, the prominent American collector Albert C. Barnes, bought 60 of Soutine's paintings on the spot. Soutine, who had been virtually penniless in his years in Paris, immediately took the money, ran into the street, hailed a Paris taxi, and ordered the driver to take him to Nice, on the French Riviera, more than 400 miles away.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSoutine lived for several years in Le Midi, initially between Vence and Cagnes-sur-Mer, where he was nicknamed by the locals \"el pintre brut\" (\"the dirty painter\"), due to his miserable living conditions on allowances from Zborowski.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSoutine once horrified his neighbours by keeping an animal carcass in his studio so that he could paint it (Carcass of Beef). There is a story that Marc Chagall saw the blood from the carcass leak out onto the corridor outside Soutine's room, and rushed out screaming, \"Someone has killed Soutine.\" Soutine painted 10 works in this series, which have since become his most well-known. His carcass paintings such as The Flayed Ox were inspired by Rembrandt's still life of the same subject, Slaughtered Ox, which he discovered while studying the Old Masters in the Louvre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe seldom showed his works, but he did take part in the important exhibition The Origins and Development of International Independent Art held at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in 1937 in Paris, where he was at last hailed as a great painter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSoon afterwards France was invaded by German troops. As a Jew, Soutine had to escape from the French capital and hide to avoid arrest by the Gestapo. From the beginning of 1941, he moved from one place to another and was sometimes forced to seek shelter in forests, sleeping outdoors. Leaving his companion Marie-Berthe Aurenche's home on Littré Street, he sought refuge on Rue des Plants, where she had friends, the painter Marcel Laloë and his wife. Fearing denunciation by their caretaker, they later assisted in the couple's escape, with fake documents, to a village in Indre-et-Loire, Champigny-sur-Veude. Expelled from several inns where their untidiness or Marie-Berthe's outbursts were criticised, the couple eventually found a house for rent on the way to Chinon, where friends discreetly visited them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere, despite intense stomach pains that soon forced him to subsist solely on porridge, the painter resumed his work, supplied with canvases and colours by the painter Marcel Laloë. The landscapes from the years 1941-1942 seem to have abandoned warm tones, such as the Landscape of Champigny. The Big Tree painted in Richelieu strained Soutine's relationship with the Castaings as he reduced the canvas size before delivering it to them. However, he also tackled new and lighter subjects like The Pigs or The Return from School after the Storm.
