Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Oller is recognised for his contributions to realism, impressionism and for being one of the most prominent Latin American artists of the nineteenth century.

Oller demonstrated artistic talent from an early age, receiving initial training in painting under the guidance of local artist Juan Cleto Noa. In 1851, he travelled to Spain, where he studied at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. There, he came under the influence of Spanish masters, particularly Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya. Later, Oller relocated to Paris, enrolling in the atelier of Thomas Couture and later working alongside influential artists such as Gustave Courbet, Camille Pissarro, and Paul Cézanne.
